Central Victoria

Overview

This area, when considered through its main highways, falls roughly into the shape of a ‘Y’. The base of the Y is formed by the Hume Highway from Melbourne to Wallan. The right branch of the Y continues up the Hume Highway to Seymour and then follows the Goulburn Valley Highway and Goulburn River up to the Murray ain the Cobram region. The left branch of the Y follows the Northern Highway, joining up with the Campaspe River and meeting the Murray at Echuca.

We have divided this region into three areas:

South Central Victoria

This area is within easy reach of Melbourne and contains numbers of historic towns such as Kilmore & Tallarook.

Goulburn Valley and Campaspe Regions

Goulburn River at Seymour
Goulburn River at Seymour

This area contains Heathcote, Seymour Shepparton, Euroa Benalla, Nagambie, Elmore and Rochester. Much of this area is heavily cultivated, and Shepparton is a major regional centre and home to major fruit and vegetable processors.

Central Murray

Paddle steamers
Paddle Steamers on the Murray at Echuca

This area contains Kerang, Cohuna, Koondrook/Barham, Moama/Echuca, Yarrawonga/Mulwala (you will find numbers of twin towns like these on either side of the state dividing line of the Murray) and Barooga. The New South Wales side includes Deniliquin, Finley and Jerilderie.

Some forthcoming events in Central Victoria:

Riverboats Music Festival

The Riverboats Music Festival is the Murray River’s premiere contemporary music event.

Staged in the twin-towns of Echuca-Moama, Riverboats takes place under towering river red gums in a natural amphitheatre next to the mighty Murray. Historic paddlesteamers meander past all weekend, and occasionally the corellas get a bit raucous at sunset. There is one stage and plenty of room for dancing, great artists and some of the best food trucks going round.

White Hat can recommend taking a 2.5 hour trip from Melbourne to spend a weekend on the river for this annual celebration.

This year's lineup includes The Waifs, Tex Perkins - Far From Folsom, The Public Opinion Afro OrchestraMark Seymour & The Undertow, Augie March, Gabriella Cohen, Benny Walker, Jen Cloher, Don Walker, Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier, Fraser A. GormanThe Kill Devil Hills,  and Leah Senior
