Williamstown Botanic Gardens
Cnr Osborne & Giffard Streets, Williamstown
Open 24 hours daily
Williamstown Botanic Gardens remain, along with
Hamilton,
Ballarat and
St Kilda gardens, as a reminder of the
smaller Victorian era civic gardens. Like many gardens of that time, it
included enclosures for animals and birds. Unusually for today, it retains
its aviary. It is no surprise that they share some aspects with the
Fitzroy Gardens as
they were both designed by the same man, Edward Latrobe Bateman. The gardens
were established in 1860.
An unusual aspect for a garden in Victoria is the formal
planting of Moreton Bay fig trees.
