David Mitchell
businessman, builder
As a builder, David Mitchell built some of the finest buildings
in Melbourne including the
Royal
Exhibition Buildings, Scots Church and the Equitable Life Assurance
offices on corner of Elizabeth & Collins Streets.
As a businessman he was one of the first to recognise the quality control
advantages of a vertically integrated enterprise where he could control the
process from quarrying his own stone through to its use in the final
building. Then, as a father, he sired and nurtured one of our great
Australians and one of the world's great opera singers - Nellie Mitchell,
who later changed her name to honour her home city of Melbourne -
Nellie Melba.
