Central Victoria

 

This area, when considered through its main highways, falls roughly into the shape of a “Y”. The base of the Y is formed by the Hume Highway from Melbourne to Wallan. The right branch of the Y continues up the Hume Highway to Seymour and then follows the Goulburn Valley Highway and Goulburn River up to the Murray ain the Cobram region. The left branch of the Y follows the Northern Highway, joining up with the Campaspe River and meeting the Murray at Echuca.

South Central Victoria

This area is within easy reach of Melbourne and contains numbers of historic towns such as Kilmore & Tallarook.

Goulburn Valley and Campaspe Regions

This area contains Heathcote, Seymour Shepparton, Euroa Benalla, Nagambie, Elmore and Rochester. Much of this area is heavily cultivated, and Shepparton is a major regional centre and home to major fruit and vegetable processors.

 

 

 

 

 

Central Murray

This area contains Kerang, Cohuna, Koondrook/Barham, Moama/Echuca, Yarrawonga/Mulwala (you will find numbers of twin towns like these on either side of the state dividing line of the Murray) and Barooga. The New South Wales side includes Deniliquin, Finley and Jerilderie.

"The Willows" Museum
"The Willows" and adjoining "Ned Kelly Post Office" are two of the few remaining buildings form Jerilderie's' foundation year in 1858.The museum features Ned Kelly memorabilia, and the adjoining Post Office occupies an important place in the history of the Kelly Gang.

Benalla Costume & Pioneer Museum
(Incorporating the Ned Kelly Museum) The Ned Kelly collection contains Ned's cummerbund, bridle, cell, witness box, gaol door and prison bed. The general museum features information on three of Benalla's famous sons - 'Weary' Dunlop, Captain Hector Walker and Michael Joseph Savage. (Situated near the bridge and the mural)

Cactus Country
This collection has plants up to 50 years old and White Hat can recommend a visit to anyone with even a slight interest in cacti and succulents. Entry chrarges apply at $10 for adults and less for concession and children

Furphy Foundry Muesum
In 1873 the blacksmith John Furphy set up a forge in Shepparton. It was here he produced a range of farm machinery, much of it of his own design or invention. Over time, the most famous became the the Furphy Water Cart which became particularly familiar during World War I. The forge expanded and shifetd several times and this museum is situated inside the still operating Furphy Foundry.

Royal Australian Armoured Corps Memorial & Army Tank Museum
The finest collection of Australian armoured fighting vehicles in the world. Over 70 tanks and armoured vehicles as well military memorabilia and weapons from around the world.

Torrumbarry Weir
This site contains a new operating weir and fish ladder, remains of the old weir and an "Interprative Centre" with information about the history and workings of the weir. The area alos contains facilities for camping, boating and walking tracks. Visitors Centre open 9am-4pm daily.
