The official residence of the Governor is referred to as Government House, and Victoria's first Government House was La Trobe's Cottage. From 1854 until 1876 Toorak House was Victoria's official Government House. From 1876 the official residence of the Governor of Victoria has been the purpose-built Government House in the King's Domain. Currently. With Federation in 1901, Melbourne became the de-facto capital of Australia until Canberra was built. As a result Melbourne's Parliament House became the Parliament House of Australia and Melbourne's Government House became the Government House of Australia housing the Governor General. During this period Stonington Mansion was used as Victoria's Government House. Once Canberra was established, Melbourne's Government House reverted to being the home of the Governor of the State of Victoria. The official offices of the Governor of Victoria are in the Old Treasury Building.
An unusual artefact relating to a Victorian Governor is the 'Press Dress' created by Mrs Butters for the arrival of Governor J Manners-Sutton.
