This week is National Volunteer Week across Australia and is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation’s volunteers.

On this day in 1912 Joan Hammond was born. Joan became a champion golfer and then a much-loved opera performer in Britain, Europe and Australia. We have listed her in our 200 Significant Australians, and her recordings are still much praised. Read more at The White Hat Guide Joan Hammond.

On this day in 1930 the aviator Amy Thomas landed in Darwin becoming the first woman to complete a solo flight from England to Australia.
